ERMITA OF JESÚS NAZARENO

Description

Located behind the church, in Jesús y María street, which leads to the castle, we find the Hermitage of Ntro. Padre Jesús Nazareno, a small chapel with a single nave and rectangular floor plan with a single entrance, which is accessed from a small courtyard at the beginning. The façade is simple, topped by a belfry. In the chancel, there is a small chapel with the main altarpiece decorated in the Baroque style, which houses the image of Christ the Nazarene. It is separated from the nave by an arch, which contains an iron gate. In lateral niches are images of the Virgin of the Rosary, the Virgin of the Bitterness and a recumbent Christ.

In the 16th century, this chapel belonged to the Hospital de la Caridad, dedicated to the aid of the indigent and travellers.

It is a modern work, executed in Llerena by the sculptor Luis Hernández, who was commissioned on 19 October 1588 along with a Virgin of the Rosary for the Brotherhood of the Rosary.   Other sculptures housed in this temple are a dressed Dolorosa, a serially made Recumbent Christ, and a Virgin of the Rosary, all modern works, although the latter is dressed in 18th century fabrics.
