ERMITA DE SAN MIGUEL DE LA BREÑA

Description

Located a few kilometres from the town, on the road leading to Malcocinado, and on a privately owned estate, it is the last remaining vestige of the old Basilica Monastery that once existed.

The monastery consisted of a simple rectangular temple, with four sections separated by arches supporting a flat roof. At the chevet, there is a hemispherical dome with a lantern and at the base a large belfry, used in times past to call the monks to worship when they were working in the fields.

In 1812, when the French withdrew from the Sierra Morena, they found it closed and in 1835, with the confiscation of the land, it passed into private hands and became a farm with agricultural functions. Of particular interest is the fountain of the convent, whose brick façade contains a mural of painted tiles with the image of Saint Michael defeating the devil.
